Ground Source Heat Pump Systems

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) are heating and cooling systems that use the ground as a source of heat in the winter and a sink of heat in the summer. They work by circulating a mixture of water and antifreeze (usually propylene glycol) through a loop of buried pipes. This is called a ground loop, and it transfers heat to or from the ground.

How do Ground Source Heat Pumps Work?

In the winter, fluid in the ground loop absorbs heat from the ground and carries it to the heat pump. The heat pump then compresses the heat to a higher temperature, making it suitable for use in heating the building. In the summer, the process is reversed. The heat pump absorbs heat from the indoor air and transfers it to the ground loop. From there, it dissipates into the ground.

You can also combine GSHPs with other heating and cooling systems, such as boilers and air conditioners, to provide a hybrid heating solution. They can provide both heating and cooling with a single system. They use renewable energy from the ground to heat and cool the building, reducing the need for fossil fuels.   A few years ago we bought an old house in the countryside that needed sensitive updating - plumbing, heating, electrical and combinations of all three.   The crew arrived in good time for a very big awkward job. Almost everything was plumbed in by the end of the first day, but I was very concerned that some pipework was encroaching on what was really the adjacent hanging space. However this was corrected the next day, deftly and with little fuss. Your electrician took good pains to explain the system operation, which was up and running by early afternoon of the second day, and the surrounding cupboards rebuilt exactly as they were.
